Veterans Memorial Fund Established by Former Chief Judge Sol Wachtler and Lauren J. Wachtler to Support Civil Legal Services

The New York Bar Foundation announced today the creation of the Wachtler Veterans Memorial Fund, an initiative spearheaded by Former Chief Judge Sol Wachtler and, his daughter, Lauren J. Wachtler. This fund is focused on providing civil legal services through our grant partners and helping veterans obtain the resources and benefits they have earned through their service to our country.

The Wachtler Veterans Memorial Fund will address the legal needs of veterans, including issues related to housing, healthcare, employment, and benefits. By offering this support, the fund aims to alleviate the burdens faced by veterans and their families, allowing them to lead more stable and fulfilling lives.

“We welcome the Wachtler family’s philanthropic leadership and dedication to this cause,” said Justice Cheryl E. Chambers, President of the New York Bar Foundation. “Their commitment to justice and gratitude for those who have served our nation is truly inspiring. In the latest grant cycle, the Foundation awarded grants to legal services organization assisting veterans in New York City, Greater Hudson Valley, and Buffalo. With this funding, we will significantly increase our impact.”

“Creating this fund in memory and in honor of veterans has a special meaning for both my father and me,” said Lauren Wachtler, a partner at Barclay Damon and a Foundation Board member. “My father, a Korean War veteran, played a pivotal role many years ago in establishing the first Veterans Court to support veterans transitioning back to civilian life who found themselves facing unique personal challenges, including mental health and legal problems. Our fund is one way that we continue my father’s unwavering commitment to assisting veterans and their families who deserve to be heard and helped.”
